At this point, we’re all well aware of the novel coronavirus‘s drastic impact on any plans we may have had for 2020.
Though BC is currently in Phase 2 of our COVID-19 Restart Plan, which means restaurants, cafes, libraries, museums, and office spaces can reopen for business, there are still plenty of restrictions in place. Phase 3, which allows for travel within BC and broader reopening of parks, hotels, and resorts, was scheduled to start sometime this month, but with no exact date for it yet, non-essential travel within BC is still discouraged.
In the wake of the pandemic, many of Vancouver’s most cherished seasonal events have been cancelled or postponed this year—that means no PNE, no Celebration of Light, no Pride, and certainly no summer concerts. Even though these cancellations are disappointing, we’re trying to look on the bright side. You and your family can still have fun this summer.
Here are a few ideas for how you can safely take advantage of BC’s best season.

Visit with loved ones outside
One of the safest places to socialize right now is outdoors, so hit the park or a backyard with friends, but remember to BYOB. Of course, you’ll still want to maintain the proper distancing, but even Dr. Bonnie Henry agrees that the virus is much less likely to spread outdoors. Stay on the safe side: keep your circle small, and be sure not to share any food.
Sleep under the stars
What’s summer in BC without camping? BC Parks reopened most provincial campgrounds earlier this month, though with new protocols and safety measures in place to control the spread of infection. If you managed to secure a campsite, make sure to maintain the healthy hand-washing practices you picked up in March—hygiene isn’t always top-of-mind in the great outdoors, but this year, it should be.

Hit the trails
Whether you’re in the mood for a morning run or an afternoon stroll through the park, outdoor exercise is still considered safe, and it’s a great way to maintain your mental health. If you keep two metres apart from your friends, you can even do it together.
Go to the beach
As the temperatures start to rise, the beach looks increasingly appealing to Vancouverites tired of being trapped indoors. Parking lots for Vancouver’s beaches and parks closed mid-March, but most have since reopened—even the logs have returned! Beachgoers should still stay safe and maintain distance from those outside their bubbles. Otherwise, be prepared to receive a warning from the vigilant Park Board Rangers now patrolling the parks and beaches.
